Maureen Lipman joining Coronation Street

The legendary actress, 72, will take on the role of Tyrone Dobbs' grandma Evelyn Plummer.

Evelyn arrives in Weatherfield after the mechanic - played by Alan Halsall - researches his family history following the death of his mum Jackie.

Evelyn - described as an "outspoken battleaxe" by Corrie bosses - will ruffle feathers when she shows up at number 9, and it doesn't take long until she's ruling the roost.

And her presence won't be appreciated by Tyrone's wife Fiz.

Coronation Street Producer Iain MacLeod confirmed the news.

But she became a household name after playing Beatie in the 1980s BT adverts.

It won't be her first time treading the Corrie cobbles - she played snooty landlady Lillian Spencer back in 2002.

Evelyn will make her debut on the cobbles in September.

However, producers are keeping the storyline strictly under wraps until her first appearance.

He said: “I am beyond thrilled that we are introducing such a great new character, played by someone of Maureen’s pedigree.

"Evelyn is eye-wateringly withering and will add a fresh dollop of northern humour to the show as she turns Tyrone and Fiz’s lives upside down.”

Maureen is best known for her roles in Roman Polanski’s The Pianist, Educating Rita and Oklahoma.

She's also starred in TV shows such as All at Number 20, The Fugitives and Plebs.
