Management at Waitrose have confirmed its store in Leek is to shut in September.
The retailer who employ 121 people at the Portland Street North site say they have traded at a loss since first opening in 2014.
Bosses say they will confirm an exact date at the earliest opportunity.
They say their priority is staff working there and will support them in any way they can over the coming months.
Talks with the Post Office about the future of their branch are continuing.
Waitrose Head of Retail Operations, Chris Earnshaw said: "This is very much a last resort, but we have traded at a loss since opening and sadly we have been unable to find a way to turn things around, despite the hard work and incredible efforts of our team here.
"We understand the disappointment this will cause and are incredibly grateful to those who have expressed their support.
"Our absolute priority is our store partners and we will support them in any way we can over the coming months."
