Remedial work starts at Hanley bus station

Users of Hanley bus station are being assured disruption to bus services will be kept to a minimum while remedial work is carried out to the building.

Investigations previously carried out revealed problems with how some of the window panels were installed when the bus station was constructed, which had caused a small number of them to move.

Construction firm Vinci, who were awarded the contract to build the bus station in 2011, will begin work today (Monday October 7) to fix the issue.

This will involve fixing brackets to provide direct support at the bottom of every glass panel throughout the building. The remedial work is being paid for in full by Vinci and is expected to take around 12 weeks to complete.

The majority of the work will be carried out during the bus station’s normal opening hours, but any work involving entrances and exits will take place when the building is closed to minimise disruption to the public.

Temporary fencing will be put up in the areas where work is taking place and while the work is not expected to result in any bus cancellations, some buses might need to be redirected to other stands within the bus station at certain points of the work. Bus station staff will be on hand to assist passengers whenever necessary.

Councillor Daniel Jellyman, cabinet member for regeneration, infrastructure and heritage, said: “This work is being carried out and paid for by the original bus station contractor, Vinci, who have recognised they are responsible for the issue and are now starting work to rectify it.

“Our main role here is to make sure any disruption to passengers is kept to an absolute minimum, and while we’re not expecting any loss of bus services, the stands buses arrive and depart from could change as the work progresses. If that is the case, we will have bus station staff on hand to direct passengers to where they need to go.

“The bus station will remain open to the public as normal. We understand that users of the station might have some concerns, but we will do everything we can to make sure any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum."
