Traders and residents are being consulted on plans to make changes to the road network in Stoke town centre – in a move aimed at reducing congestion for motorists.
The proposals put forward by Stoke-on-Trent City Council will also improve accessibility to Spode’s China Halls, the King’s Hall, Kingsway car park, Stoke Market and the town centre.
Letters have been sent out today to more than 70 properties in the area outlining the plans, which include:
• Reversing the one-way system on South Wolfe Street, so vehicles enter from Fleming Road;
• Creating a one-way access into Kingsway from Church Street;
• Creating a cycle lane on Kingsway and South Wolfe Street;
• Installing new road markings and improving directional signs.
Councillor Daniel Jellyman, cabinet member for regeneration, transport and heritage, said: “This is about reducing congestion in Stoke town centre and making it easier for people to get to where they want to go. We have Stoke Minster, the King’s Hall, China Halls, Kingsway car park and Stoke Market all in close proximity to one another but if you want to get to them and are coming from the direction of City Road, you have to go all the way round the one-way system which is frustrating for motorists.
“By changing the direction of traffic on South Wolfe Street and opening up Kingsway, it will make it much easier and straightforward for people to get to Kingsway car park and access the attractions, as well as reduce the amount of traffic on the rest of the one-way system. As the work at the Spode factory continues to flourish, this is an exciting time for the town. The public now have their chance to comment on the proposals and we will take each response into consideration. I hope they support these changes.”
The consultation will run until Friday, November 24. Depending on the outcome, the final proposals will most likely be implemented in early 2018. Additional correspondence will take place with all businesses and residents in the area to discuss access needs once a construction date is confirmed.
