Planners green light new homes development in Burslem

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has given the go-ahead to transform a former industrial site in Burslem.

The brownfield site has stood empty for more than a decade and is now set to be regenerated and brought back to life with more than 40 new homes – providing another major boost for the town.

The development on Bournes Bank, off Wood Street, is the latest to be brought forward after the city council secured £9.5 million from the Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund in 2018, to help prepare seven derelict sites in the area for development.

The city council’s planning committee today gave applicant Amstone Development the green light to build a total of 43, two and three-bed homes on the site.

The work will also see three existing bottle kilns on the site, known as Three Sisters, retained, restored and maintained.

The announcement comes just weeks after St Modwen Homes secured permission to build 216 homes on the site of the former Royal Doulton factory in the town, another Housing Infrastructure Fund site.

Councillor Joanne Powell-Beckett, cabinet member for housing, said: “This is another hugely positive step forward for Burslem and the city as a whole.

"We’re committed to trying to bring brownfield sites in the city back to life wherever possible, and that is why this news is really encouraging, particularly coming on the back of the recent announcement on the Royal Doulton site.

“The world is in an unprecedented position at the moment but our housing growth plans across the city remain ambitious.

"Many of these sites in Burslem have remained derelict and vacant over the years due to issues with the land, but the Housing Infrastructure Fund grant we successfully bid for provides the funding gap for us to really kick-start residential-led regeneration on these more challenging sites.

“Bringing these sites back to life will bring footfall into Burslem which is good news for businesses, the economy and the regeneration of the town.

"Bournes Bank is close to the town centre and the housing development will provide a supporting role in what we hope will be a successful future for the town.

"It will also transform an eyesore site which people have had to look at for years and improve the area for existing residents.”

The housing development will consist of 31, two-bedroom homes and 12, three-bedroom homes, all of which would be two-storey, brick and tile built with a modern design and appearance.

The site will be accessed from Woodbank street which would provide access to all proposed properties other than six properties to the north east of the site, which would be directly accessed off Bournes Bank.
