A man who had to be retrieved from a canal while trying to evade police has been charged with burglary.

Officers investigating an incident at a property in Kidsgrove on Saturday say the 29-year-old from Biddulph jumped into the Trent and Mersey Canal.

He then made his way into the Harecastle Tunnel, but was removed by crews from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The man received treatment at the scene from West Midlands Ambulance Service, before being taken to hospital.

He has since been charged with one count of burglary dwelling and theft, and is due to appear at North Staffordshire Justice Centre on 26 September.
