Man arrested on suspicion of murder following man's death in hospital

Police investigating an assault in Hanley have made an arrest, following the man's death in hospital.

Officers were called to a report of an assault at around 5.40pm on Wednesday 8 May at Imperial Court, where a man sustained severe injuries.

Mark McNair, aged 62, was then taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital where he remained until he died yesterday (2 June).

A 49-year-old Stoke-on-Trent man who was arrested at the time, but subsequently released on bail pending further enquiries, has now been re-arrested on suspicion of murder and is in custody for questioning.

A post mortem is expected to take place later today to establish the cause of death.

Next of kin have been informed and are now being supported by specially trained officers.

Detective Inspector Alan Lyford, senior investigating officer for Staffordshire Police, said: “This is now being treated as a murder investigation and we would appeal for anyone with information about the circumstances leading up to Mr McNair's death to contact 101 quoting incident number 504 of 8 May.
