David Conway has announced he will stand down as leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council next May.
Mr Conway, who has been in the role since 2015, says that the decision is down to issues he is having with his vision.
He said: “I have had eyesight problems for a while now and as this gets worse, it makes it more challenging for me to do everything that I want to as part of my role as leader.
"While I’m confident that I can work with this challenging situation until next year, I want to make sure there is a clear plan in place. That’s why I’m making arrangements now.
“I’ll remain a councillor and a new leader of the council will be chosen from the City Independents group at our annual meeting in May 2018.
“I am thankful to everyone for the well wishes and support that I’ve received. People have been exceptional.”
