Further investigations are being carried out over safety concerns on the A53 Festival Park flyover in Etruria.
The city council says an inspection has shown a problem with an expansion joint on one side of the carriageway.
But before it can be repaired, they need to look at whether that would impact on the rest of the joint, on other side of the road.
A Stoke-on-Trent City Council spokesman said: “We have carried out a detailed inspection of the expansion joint today, with a specialist supplier. This inspection has shown a problem with the joint on one side of the carriageway. Before we carry out works on this joint, it is important that we fully understand if there could be any impact on the rest of the joint, on other side of the carriageway.
“Further investigative works will be carried out on site today (Thursday), with a specialist consultant. This will involve lifting open the surface of the carriageway to inspect the joint across its full expanse, across both lanes. When this has taken place, we will know the full extent of the works needed.
"We ask motorists to please bear with us while this work takes place, and to understand that it may take until the weekend for all investigative works to be completed, before we then carry out the repairs. It is necessary that we carry out a full and complete inspection, so that we can make comprehensive and lasting repairs to the site.
"We take this matter extremely seriously and the safety of all road users is our number one consideration.”
