Investigations continues into death of man in Longton

Detectives are continuing to investigate the death of a man in the Longton area of Stoke-on-Trent.

Three men, aged 20, 30 and 49, initially arrested on suspicion of murder yesterday have been released under investigation while enquiries continue. 

At 2.25pm yesterday (15 May) police were called to a report of a man with a hammer causing damage to a vehicle parked on Speedwall Street.

Police say he had been detained by members of the public in Wood Street. 

Officers attended the scene. The detained man became unresponsive, and CPR was performed until the ambulance service arrived.

The man, aged 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead on arrival. 

Formal identification has not yet taken place, but next of kin have been informed and they are being supported by specialist officers. 

A post mortem will take place tomorrow (17 May).

Detective Inspector Alan Lyford said, “We have increased police patrols in the area, but believe that this was an isolated incident. 

“We’re continuing to appeal for anyone who was in the area in the time, and witnessed the incident, to get in touch with us as soon as possible quoting incident number 395 of 15 May.”

This matter is also being investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
