Clean up operation on busy commuter route after lorry spilled around 300 litres of diesel

A main road in Cheshire is closed following a fuel spill, after a collision involving a lorry and a van.

The incident happened on the A5011 Linley Lane in Alsager around 4:30am this morning (11 June).

No-one is believed to have been injured as a result of the incident, but the HGV's fuel tank had been destroyed in the collision.

Approximately 300 to 400 litres of diesel leaked from the vehicle and was going down three drains.

The road was closed and firefighters used specialist clay mats and moved earth to limit the amount of diesel going down the drains. They also used a pop-up dam to prevent further leakage.

Specialist environmental protection resources attended from Powey Lane Fire Station.

Firefighters were at the scene for nearly three hours, before they handed the incident over to Cheshire East Council's highways department.

They are now removing the remaining spillage from the roadway.

Gully suckers are being brought in to suck spillages out of the drains.

The A5011 Linley Lane is set to remain closed until around 9pm this evening in both directions from the Lawton Road crossroads in Alsager to the A34 traffic lights.
