Cheshire abattoir closed

A Nantwich abattoir has been closed down, over concerns about standards.

The Food Standards Agency had carried out several appraisal visits to the High Peak Meat Exports Ltd plant to help the business prepare for re-approval, following a High Court ruling that dictated businesses which had changed ownership needed a new approval.

FSA vets gave advice on how to rectify a number of issues, however, when the approval visit was undertaken in February this year, the evidence indicated that not all the improvements that were needed had been done.

The government body determined the establishment did not meet all the infrastructure requirements which permit the safe production of meat, and could therefore be a risk to public health.

They ordered the slaughterhouse to stop operating by 12 noon today.

There is a right to appeal within one month.
