Cars damaged and traffic gridlocked by motorists avoiding A500 diversion

Residents in a Newcastle village say drivers avoiding roadworks on the A34 Talke roundabout are creating traffic chaos.

They say wing mirrors have been knocked off and vehicles bumped and scratched while the number of motorists using Red Street as a short cut has increased due to works taking place on the A34 Talke roundabout.

The official diversion is along the A500, but many drivers - including those of HGVs - are choosing to disregard it.

Residents have told us that the area has become gridlocked during peak hours, and their journeys to and from work have become a nightmare due to the increase in traffic.

They also say that outside of the busy times, other motorists are flying along the narrow Liverpool Road at dangerous speeds.
