Campaigners unhappy over opencast mine

Campaigners are staging a public meeting today over UK Coal's plans for an opencast mine in North Staffordshire.

The 80 hectare surface mine is proposed near Bignall End to recover up to 450,000 tonnes of coal, vital to support the UK's electricity generation needs and helping keep bills affordable.

The proposed site will operate over two and a half years and could create up to 60 jobs.

Claire says many people in the area remember the days of the old coal pits.
