80s themed celebration taking place for Stoke market's 35th birthday

Quizzes, face painting and a scavenger hunt are amongst the activities taking place to mark Stoke market’s 35th birthday.

An eighties themed celebration on until 3pm.

The old market went up in flames in May 1982, having been open 99 years.

The new indoor market opened its doors two years later.

Chris Doolan, from Doolan Pets, had a stall at both the old and new markets.

He said: “My family have been in the market trade for forty four years.

“It is a lovely place Stoke, the people and the traders are really friendly.

"You can get everything you could want under one roof here, just like you can at the supermarket, but it is a lot fresher and cheaper.

"I think anything that stands the test of time is worth looking after."

In recent months the market has seen new stalls open.

Emily Robertson started work on Alan's Butchers when she was 15, but has since become the co-owner of butchers Market Corner.

She said: "Everybody helps each other here.

"I have been coming in the market since I was a little girl, and I know everyone.

"I have known Alan since I was about six, and he gave me my first job.

"It is all just one big family in here, and that is what makes Stoke market.

"There are more stalls coming, people are wanting more licences.

"Once upon a time this market was really booming, and I think we will get there again.

"This market will become like it was when it first opened."

Councillor Carl Edwards, cabinet member for the environment said: “To be open thirty five years is a brilliant achievement.

“Markets are an important part of our heritage and our communities.

“In last few years Stoke market has seen an increase in traders and now has a vast array of stalls for shoppers to choose from – with more exciting stalls in the works.

“I would encourage anyone who has the time to pop along to the market on to celebrate with the traders and join in the fun.”
