Porter at the double as Crewe seal away win

Crewe Alexandra secured their first away win of the season with a 2-1 victory at Oldham.

The Alex made one change going into the game with a debut for defender Olly Lancashire who joined the summer.

He replaced James Jones who dropped to the bench.

Crewe fell behind early on, with Christopher Missilou on target for the hosts inside two minutes.

But the Railwaymen hit back through Chris Porter midway through the half.

The Alex were then in front four minutes from half time when Daniel Powell was brought down in the area and Porter, making his 500th league appearance, netted his second from the penalty spot.

Speaking to the club's official website after the game manager Dave Artell said: “It is something of a travesty that it ended 2-1 really. If it ended 4, 5, 6, I don’t think anyone could complain today. Apart from the first 10 minutes, I thought we dominated the game and we should have scored more. Daniel Powell had a rebound off the line, Olly has had a header from about six yards and the goalkeeper has pulled off a great save and Owen has missed from about four yards and they are the ones that I  can think about off the top of my head.

“We had numerous chances to score and if the lad puts it in at the death the 2-2 would have been an absolute travesty.

“We started poorly again and conceded an early goal so that is something we will look at and see if we are not doing something we should be. It has happened in both games, so it isn’t a travelling thing but after that we were dominant and the Oldham sponsors were right to give the man of the match award to their goalkeeper.

On match winner Porter, the gaffer said: “Chris is a good player. He had something like 15 goals in 31 starts last season and it is 2 in 2 now, so I would think he is feeling much better than last week. Hopefully he can have this feeling most weekends.

“He led the line really well and did his job for the team and I am delighted that he got his reward with his two goals. “
