Six guinea pigs have been found abandoned in a box by the side of the road near Newcastle.
A member of the public found the abandoned animals in Barthomley Road in Audley last week (June 29).
RSPCA inspector Charlotte Melvin said: “They were just dumped at the side of the road in a cardboard box. There was some hay in the box, but that was all.
“One of the adult guinea pigs is pregnant, so whether that was why someone decided to dump them we’re not sure - but there is never an acceptable excuse for abandoning animals.
“It’s heartbreaking that there are irresponsible people dump animals when they are no longer wanted rather than turning to us or other rescues to ask for help. Animals should not be left to helplessly fend for themselves in the wild where they are unlikely to make it.”
The RSPCA is now appealing for information on how they came to be dumped in the area. Anyone who recognises the guinea pigs or who may have seen someone abandoning them should contact the charity’s appeal line on 0300 123 8018.
The guinea pigs are now being looked after in the RSPCA’s care.
