A man has been detained under the Mental Capacity Act and a crossbow recovered following an incident in Stoke-on-Trent.

Police, including armed officers, dog support and negotiators were called out to a property in Pointon Grove in Norton at around 2.45am this morning to a report of a man threatening to harm himself.

The area was cordoned off while officers worked to resolve the situation.

Negotiators successfully arranged for the man to come out of the flat to waiting officers.

The man was then immediately assessed by waiting paramedics, before being detained for treatment and assessment under the Mental Capacity Act.

Supt. Elliot Sharrard-Williams from Staffordshire Police said "Our absolute priority during this operation was to ensure the safety of everyone involved including the occupant of the address.

"Our well trained officers worked hard to resolve the incident quickly and safely, and our highly skilled negotiators were able to bring this incident to a conclusion."

The road has now reopened.
