Armed police arrest six men following disturbances

A machete and hammer have been seized, after police were called to disturbances in Stoke-on-Trent last night.

A suspected firearm was also recovered, but an examination has shown it is a plastic, toy gun.

Based on reports of the incidents in Fenton and Sandford Hill, armed officers were dispatched.

Six men, aged between 18 and 23, were arrested on suspicion of affray.

A red Mercedes has been seized, which is now subject to a detailed forensic examination.

DCI Ricky Fields, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are at the beginning of a detailed investigation to establish exactly what happened in Fenton and Sandford Hill last night.

“Early indications suggest this was an isolated incident and those involved are known to each other.

“Six men are in custody and are being questioned by detectives.

“To reassure local residents we have stepped up high visibility patrols in the area and this will continue over the coming days.

“Anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak to those officers, or call us on 101.”
