Two goals from Chris Dagnall edged Crewe closer to safety after a 2-0 win over Colchester.
The 30 year-old has netted seven goals in his last six games to pull the Railwaymen 13 points clear of the relegation zone.
Dagnall grabbed the opener midway through the first half before adding a second in the 84th minute.
It is now three wins from their last four for Crewe, who are up to 18th in the table.
Crewe boss Dave Artell told the club's official website: "I thought we were worthy winners. We showed intent throughout the game. They had one chance first half with a second phase set piece when we didn't get out quickly enough. Other than that I cannot remember them having too many chances. Second half, they had better spells and forced Ben into some good saves late on but I didn't think we let them have too many chances over the 90 minutes. They have shown a real solidness to their play. They knew their jobs and they have done their jobs, well.
"They got rewarded with a second goal and that's five clean-sheets in 12 and 3 in 4, so with those stats you have got a chance. Its pleasing.
The Alex are back in action next Saturday when they make the trip to play-off contenders Carlisle.
